Janet H. Gabriels

Loudonville- Janet Ruth Hohenstein Gabriels entered into eternal life January 5th, 2023 at the age of 80 surrounded by her loving family. Janet was born in Albany, NY, the youngest of three children and only daughter to the late William and Ruth Towsley Hohenstein, joining two older brothers on April 13, 1942. Janet attended Cardinal McCloskey High School and the Academy of the Holy Names and worked as an operator for the NY Telephone Company at the age of 18. In 1962, she married F. Forrest Gabriels and they had two children. She later worked as the office manager in his Ophthalmology practice on Madison Avenue in Albany, but her primary love and role was that of mother and homemaker. Janet was passionate about her faith and lived her life with the utmost honesty and integrity. You always knew where you stood with Janet. She was a stickler for detail and took great pride in everything she did. She was extremely bright with an incredibly sharp wit as many of her family and friends can attest. She went back to school and earned an Associate’s degree in Computer Science graduating summa cum laude from Albany Business College in 1990, the same year her son earned a Medical Doctorate and her daughter a Bachelor of Science degree. She was instrumental in the success of her children. Janet was a stunning beauty in her youth with an unforgettable smile throughout her lifetime. She was a lover of animals and derived much joy from her Bichon Frise dogs and their offspring as did the entire extended family for many years. Janet is pre-deceased by her brother, William G. (Margaret) Hohenstein, Jr. She is survived by her husband, F. Forrest Gabriels, MD; her beloved brother, Rev. Robert J. Hohenstein, Pastor Emeritus of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Schenectady. She is the loving mother of Christopher Forrest Gabriels, MD and Erin Gabriels Bazinet (Charles Van Wormer). Grandmother to cherished, Christian, Charles, and Eric Gabriels, Gabrielle (Lance) Douglas, Caroline, Elizabeth, and William Bazinet. She is also survived by cousins she adored and is the beloved Aunt Janet to several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services Thursday, January 12, 2023 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 1255 Pleasant St., Schenectady, NY 12303 where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated by her brother Rev. Robert Hohenstein. The Rite of Committal will be held at Our lady Help of Christians Cemetery, Glenmont, NY immediately following the Mass.
